AND THE WINNER IS......

The first reading scores of the year are in! Kingfishers take the lead this week, followed narrowly by Owls in second place and Robins in third. To keep things interesting and celebrate the achievements of all classes, we're having an Olympic medal table this year with twelve points for the winner, ten for second, eight for third, six for fourth and four for fifth. So there's everything to play for! You can see the scoreboard at the bottom of this post.

All you have to do to play your part is to make sure you remind your child to read every evening, put your signature in the box in their reading record, and send it back into school.

"My child's forgotten to bring their reading record home!"
We've all done it! That's fine - let their teacher know, or pop a note in their bag, and we'll help them find it and remember it.

"My child's so tired at 3:30 it's a battle getting them to read."
Completely understand. Please don't have battles over books! It's absolutely OK to play a phonics game or just read a story to them. If you fancy coming along to Reading Cafe after school on Tuesdays, your child can stamp their book saying they've listened to the story there, which counts as one of their five a week!

"My child's read their school reading book and is bored with it."
Let us know - just put a note in the reading record or catch your child's teacher in the playground. We don't want children to feel "stuck" on books. Older children who are no longer reading phonics books may just need reminding to change their book. Remember that it's always fine to read other stuff at home, too - favourite books and magazines and newspapers and information texts and recipes are all great shouts.

Please use your child's reading record to stay in touch about their reading - it's a brilliant tool for us all "staying on the same page"! Our teaching staff and TAs are all absolutely committed to supporting you and your child in catching the reading bug, so if you're having difficulties or you're not sure about something, don't ever be shy about asking.

Leaving you this week with this wonderful quote from the brilliant author Neil Gaiman. KEEP READING!

I believe we have an obligation to read for pleasure, in private and in public places. If we read for pleasure, if others see us reading, then we learn, we exercise our imaginations. We show others that reading is a good thing.
